Being a new parent,it has been always so difficult for me to choose between cloth diapers which are also called as reusable diapers and the disposable ones. For me, convenience is the top most priority along with my baby's comfort.

Elders in my family have always suggested me to use cloth diapers or nappies. Me being a hands-on-mom found the idea to be very intimidating.

What made me fear the reusable diapers?

I always linked the idea of reusable diapers with extra load of Washing.. I always thought cloth diapers to be the big piece of cotton napkin which has to folded in a certain way around the baby and pinned.

I was so wrong ..

Cloth diapers which I earlier assumed are now a thing of the past. There are so many brands now available in Indian market which have super convenient reusable diapers. And extra brownie points for the quirky patterns.

Benefits of the Cloth Diapers

According to my experience and understanding I can state a few Benefits of cloth diapers :

  • heart
No harmful chemicals come in contact with the baby's skin. So the chances of having skin allergies is less.
  • heart
Environment Friendly, as disposable diapers take a lot of years to degenerate.
  • heart
Pocket friendly, these are like a one time investment compared to the disposable diapers.
  • heart
Long lasting, these last long time and a free size cloth diaper can be used until the baby is 17kgs

Introducing Superbottoms - a premier high quality cloth diaper brand in India

SuperBottoms is a premier high quality cloth diaper brand in India. This brand was started by Salil and Pallavi. They have extensively experimented and researched before designing these reusable diapers.  They say :

We at Superbottoms have designed cloth diapers after a lot of experimentation with various designs and cloths.
As parents, we have very carefully chosen the features that went into making these diapers.
Right from the double leak guards on each diaper, to the best suede lining, to the idea of using square tabs. Each small feature, we believe, can go a long way in making you and your baby’s experience with cloth diapering a pleasure
.

Varieties of Cloth Diapers Available at Superbottoms

  • heart
    Pocket Diapers
  • heart
    Cover Diapers
  • heart
    Superbottoms Plus AIO (heavy absorbency)
  • Pocket Diapers have a pocket of the dry-feel fabric in which one places the soaker (absorbent pad). This diaper needs to be washed completely once soaked. One soaker lasts 3-4 hours and hence it is a good day time diapering option.
  • Cover Diapers do not have this pocket; instead the dry-feel layer is attached ON the soaker. This soaker is placed inside the cover. This is a pad-and-pant system. In this, you can change soaker and reuse the outer. This makes it an economical diapering choice. One pad lasts 3-4 hours. This is good for day-time diapering. This is more economical compared to pocket diapers.
  • All in One Diaper (Superbottoms Plus) – These are diapers wherein one soaker is stitched inside the outer itself making it easy to wear. This diaper comes with 2 super thirsty organic bamboo cotton soakers. One soaker is attached while the other is detachable. Both the soakers together can last 7-8+ hours. This is therefore excellent for heavy wetting babies or for night-time cloth diapering.

My Experience with Cover Diapers and Superbottoms Plus (AIO)

I have been using two different cloth diapers from Superbottoms for my baby. The ones I have used are Cover Diaper and Superbottom Plus. My experience is based overy these two.

Both the diapers are very cute looking and are easily sized because of so many sizing snaps attached. It is very easy to make them fit according to my girl's fit. The seat size and waist size both can be adjusted. This a fantastic feature.

The L shaped square tabs again are very convenient in keeping the diaper in place.

Cover Diaper - The outer waterproof cover is very efficient in holding back the moisture. It doesn't leak easily and keeps the surroundings dry as well. The inner lining of the diaper is very soft and gentle on the baby's skin.  The material of the soaker is very absorbent as well. once a soaker is wet it can be replaced by another soaker and the same outer covering can be repeated.

The soakers are snapped into place. The only drawback I initially struggled was that the soaker bunched into a place but later I adjusted the seat sizing and the problem was resolved.

The Cover Diaper worked for about three hours for my baby. These are available for Rs 890

Adya in SuperBottom Cover Diaper

Superbottom Plus - This diaper is a delight. It was all the features of a great cloth diaper. It comes with a attacked soaker and for extended use an extra soaker can be placed in the back pocket. This increases the absorbency and for smaller babies the diaper can last overnight. This is the trimmest AIO diaper which fits beautifully snug on babies. These are available for Rs 890

My daughter has been using these diapers from past couple of months. I have never faced the problem of leakage and rashes with her. Although I am very vigilant with changing diapers especially when we are at home. And I give her a lot of diaper free time as well.

Cost Comparison

I did a little math on the comparing the costs which I would like share:

Disposable diaper cost = Rs 1000 / 68 counts

1 diaper = rs 14.7

Diapers used in a day = 6

cost of diaper for 1 day = 6*14.7 = Rs 88.25

Cost of diaper for 1 yr = Rs 32200

Cost of diaper for 2.5 yrs = roughly around Rs 80000

Cost for one cloth diaper = rs 890

We require about 8 diapers in a day and considering the washing and drying time we might want to stock around 20 diapers

so cost of 20 cloth diapers= Rs 17800

These diapers lasts for 2.5 yrs that's roughly throughout the diapering age of the kid. Any additional cost, ie. washing powder, electricity etc will be over and above Rs 17800.

Overall Thoughts

I am really impressed with the Superbottoms cloth diapers. I am fairly new to the concept of cloth diapering. This is an extremely affordable compared to disposable diapers. If you dont mind washing these diapers for reusing then it's very effective and skin friendly. We dont deny the fact that there will be times when disposable diapers are more convenient like travelling, illness (when baby poops more than usual) etc. But  there is a huge difference in the costing of both the variants.
